Stem-Branch Same Element干與地同

When the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch share the same element

Ganyeojidong (干與地同) describes a pillar where the Heavenly Stem and the core element of the Earthly Branch are identical. This creates a concentrated, pure expression of that element's energy. The twelve such pillars are: Jiǎ-Yín, Yǐ-Mǎo, Bǐng-Wǔ, Dīng-Sì, Gēng-Shēn, Xīn-Yǒu, Rén-Zǐ, Guǐ-Hài, Wù-Chén, Wù-Xū, Jǐ-Chǒu, Jǐ-Wèi.

What is Ganyeojidong?

Each of the four pillars (Year, Month, Day, Hour) consists of a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. When the stem's element matches the dominant hidden stem (core element) inside the branch, the pillar is called Ganyeojidong. For example, in Jiǎ-Yín (甲寅), the stem Jiǎ is Yang Wood and the branch Yín's core element is also Jiǎ Wood — creating a doubly pure Wood energy.

The 12 Ganyeojidong Pillars

Wood: Jiǎ-Yín (甲寅), Yǐ-Mǎo (乙卯) / Fire: Bǐng-Wǔ (丙午), Dīng-Sì (丁巳) / Earth: Wù-Chén (戊辰), Wù-Xū (戊戌), Jǐ-Chǒu (己丑), Jǐ-Wèi (己未) / Metal: Gēng-Shēn (庚申), Xīn-Yǒu (辛酉) / Water: Rén-Zǐ (壬子), Guǐ-Hài (癸亥).

Key Characteristics — Purity and Intensity

Ganyeojidong pillars channel elemental energy in a single, undiluted direction. Strengths: exceptional focus, strong talent, and expertise in the domain governed by that element. Weaknesses: reduced flexibility, stronger stubbornness, and a tendency toward elemental imbalance that must be managed through the chart's overall composition.

Ganyeojidong in the Day Pillar

When the Day Pillar is Ganyeojidong, the person tends to have a strong identity and clear personal values. Traditionally, this can create friction with a partner due to both parties' strong individuality. However, this must be read holistically — alongside combinations (He), clashes (Chong), and the useful element (Yongshin) of the full chart.

Ganyeojidong in Other Pillars

Year Pillar: upbringing in an environment with concentrated elemental energy — strong family identity. Month Pillar: career and social roles strongly colored by that element's nature. Hour Pillar: the energy pattern intensifies in later life or in the relationship with children.
